  1. You and your instrument (if you play one)

  3. Another device (a laptop or a 2nd mobile phone)

Method:

Step 1: Play the backing track on the other device and listen through the device’s speakers.
Step 2: Record your performance (Video + Audio) on your phone using the video recorder mode in your camera app.

Pros & Cons:

Pros:

  • Super easy.

Cons:

  • Mediocre audio quality.
  • You’re limited to how far you can be from your phone (the recording device).

Quality: Medium

Requires:

  1. You and your instrument (if you play one)
  2. Your phone
  3. Another device (a laptop or a 2nd mobile phone)
  4. Headphones
  5. A computer (to edit, but you can also use your phone or tablet if you want)
  6. Video editing software

Method:

Step 1: Play the backing track on another device and listen through headphones so the sound of the backing track doesn’t bleed into what you’re recording.

Step 2: Record your performance (Video + Audio) on your phone using the video recorder mode in your camera app then mix this video with the backing track using a video editing program.

Pros & Cons:

Pros:

  • Relatively easy.
  • Quality is better than the basic method.

Cons:

  • Requires a computer, a video editing software, and some editing work.

Method 3

Difficulty: Pro
Quality: Pro

Requires:

  1. You and your instrument (if you play one)
  2. Your phone
  3. Headphones (if you’re going to sing or record anything using a mic)
  4. A device to record to (computer/tablet/phone)
  5. A computer (to edit, but you can also use your phone or tablet if you want)
  6. Video editing software
  7. An audio interface (not necessary but advised)
  8. A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)

Method:

Step 1: Play the backing track and listen through headphones (necessary if you’re recording vocals or anything using a mic because the backing track will bleed into your recording).
Step 2: Record the audio on your device of choice using a DAW and the video on your phone or camera then combine them using a video editing program.

Pros:

  • Superior audio quality.

Cons:

  • Requires a lot of things (sound interface, computer, video editing software, DAW, program knowledge and time).
